NDIS Plan Review Preparation: Tips to Get the Support You Need

NDIS Plan Review Preparation Tips To Get The Support You Need

Your NDIS plan review is an important opportunity to reflect on your current supports, goals and what’s working – and what’s not. Whether it’s your first review or you’ve been through the process before, being well prepared can make all the difference in getting the right support for the next 12 months or more.

At McArthur Community Care, we understand how overwhelming plan reviews can feel for people with disability and their carers. We’re here to walk beside you with support, guidance and insight so you feel confident and in control during your NDIS journey.

In this article, we’ll explain what an NDIS plan review is, what you can expect, and how to prepare to make sure your voice is heard.

What is an NDIS Plan Review?

An NDIS plan review is a meeting with a representative from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to look at your current plan and decide what supports you may need moving forward. The review usually takes place every 12 or 24 months, depending on your circumstances, but can be requested earlier if your needs or situation change.

The review is your chance to talk about:

  • What has worked well in your current plan
  • What hasn’t worked or needs to change
  • Whether your goals have changed
  • Any new supports or services you might need

Why Preparation is Important

Coming prepared helps ensure your plan reflects your real needs, challenges and goals. It also makes it easier for your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or NDIA planner to understand how your current supports are helping or if they’re falling short.

Many participants find that planning ahead leads to better outcomes, more appropriate funding, and greater peace of mind.

7 Tips to Help You Prepare for Your NDIS Review

Reflect on Your Current Plan

Take time to think about what’s been working in your current plan. Are your core supports meeting your daily needs? Have you been able to access services like therapy, transport, or community participation?

Track Your Progress Towards Your Goals

Your NDIS goals are central to your plan. Write down any progress you've made and think about whether those goals are still relevant or if you want to add new ones.

Gather Reports and Evidence

Support letters, assessments and progress reports from allied health professionals, support coordinators or your service providers can strengthen your case for continued or increased funding.

Keep Receipts and Records of Fund Usage

Bring along evidence of how you've spent your funding. If you've underspent, think about why – was it due to provider shortages or unmet needs?

List Your Unmet Needs

Is there something you didn’t receive funding for in your last plan that you still need? Make a list and be ready to explain how it will help you achieve your goals.

Consider Changes in Your Life

Have there been any changes to your health, living situation, work or education? This information helps your planner understand your current support needs more accurately.

Get Support if You Need It

You don’t have to go it alone. A support coordinator or trusted service provider like McArthur Community Care can help you prepare, gather documentation and even attend your review with you if needed.

During the NDIS Review Meeting

The review meeting might be in person, over the phone or via video call. It’s helpful to have your notes, reports, and a trusted support person with you. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions. Remember – it’s your plan, and your lived experience matters.

Take your time, ask for clarification if needed, and make sure everything important to you is discussed. If English isn’t your first language, you can request an interpreter. You also have the right to bring an advocate or representative.

After the Review

Once the review is complete, your new plan will be finalised and sent to you. If you're not happy with the outcome, you can request an internal review within 3 months. Again, having supporting evidence is key.
